Souvenir pennant : HMAS Shoalhaven
Royal blue felt silk screened souvenir pennant showing the lyrebird ship's badge of HMAS Shoalhaven, in brown, yellow, green and white, within a rope border sumounted by a naval crown. Beneath is the motto 'UBER ET SALUBER' in a yellow scroll, and 'H.M.A.S. SHOALHAVEN' arranged in a single row of vertical letters. Note that the 'motto' on the pennant is not the official one for this ship, which was 'Lumen celeste sequamur'.
This souvenir of the River Class frigate HMAS Shoalhaven was one of a number of items decorating a wall in the Australian BOD Sergeant's Mess in Japan, where they served as part of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF) between 1946 and 1952. HMAS Shoalhaven was built by Walkers Ltd, at Maryborough, Queensland, in December 1944 and subsequently saw service in support of BCOF, and in the Korean War. She was paid off in December 1955.
