History / Summary

This weapon was captured by C Company 2 Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) during Operation Coburg in Bien Hoa Province. During this time, V Company from the 1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment (RNZIR), was attached to 2RAR as a fifth rifle company. 2RAR, as part of First Australian Task Force (1ATF), was deployed to the Bien Hoa–Long Khanh border for Operation Coburg. Coburg aimed to protect allied bases during the 1968 Tet Offensive. It was the first time 1ATF had been deployed outside Phuoc Tuy. 2RAR was involved in the operation until 14 February. At 2.17 pm on 1 February 1968 two Viet Cong (VC) approached C Company's ambush position from the south. They were thought to have been involved in the VC Tet activities and were returning north, carrying this weapon and two rounds. They also had an AK47 rifle, a .38 pistol and ammunition. Both VC, who were dressed in greens, were killed in action. They were identified as Main Force VC, members of C24 of 275 Regiment.
