Description

In 1933, Adolph Hitler became chancellor of Germany. He presided over Germany's new fascist government - a Third Reich which Hitler promised, would last "a thousand years." This cassette examines the events leading up to World War II. The listener is taken step by step through the crises that led to the outbreak of fighting. Hitler continues to consolidate his power and increase Germany's territorial demands. Winston Churchill, early an advocate of military preparedness in England, warns the British of the threats posed by Germany's militaristic stance. There are news reports of the Italian-Abyssinian conflict and the inability of the League of Nations to handle the situation. England's Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain meets with Hitler three times during the Sudeten crisis. The cassette includes Chamberlain's famous "Peace for Our Time" statement, as well as Churchill's views opposing the policy of appeasement. It concludes with reports of Germany's invasion of Poland and reannexation of Danzig.
