Crete. 1944-11-26. This Baltimore bomber aircraft of No. 459 Squadron RAAF based at Berka in the Western Desert, North Africa, was hit in the port engine and port mainplane by A/A (anti-aircraft) fire while dropping leaflets over German forces in the north-western corner of Crete and made a successful forced landing on an emergency landing in a friendly part of the island. The crew of the aircraft was 402029 Warrant Officer (WO) R. W. D. Calvert, pilot, of Lane Cove, NSW, 422068 WO K. J. Wiblin, navigator, of Strathfield, NSW, 410754 WO R. Smith, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner (WOP/AG), of Carlton, Vic, and 425863 Flight Sergeant R. K. Mahoney, WOP/AG, of Rockhampton, Qld. After the landing in which the port tyre burst, the Cretan partisans came to inspect the aircraft.
