Memorial Development Project to hold consultations around Australia

4 mins read

Following the launch of the Australian War Memorial’s Development Project plans by Prime Minister Scott Morrison on 18 November, the Memorial will hold a series of community consultation sessions in each Australian state and territory in December.

Communities around the country will have the opportunity to hear from members of the Memorial Development Project leadership team, including Executive Project Director Wayne Hitches, in consultations that include a presentation and a drop-in session at which the public can speak directly with Memorial staff.

The sessions will include an overview of the project plans, which will see an increase in exhibition and function space of 5,000 square metres. The plans include a new southern entrance, refurbishment of the main building, a new Anzac Hall connected to the main building via a glazed link, an extension to the Bean Building, and public realm works.

The first of two weeks of national community consultations began in Orange in the New South Wales central west on Monday 2 December before moving onto Newcastle, Albury, and Wagga Wagga. Sessions will take place in Hobart and Launceston before the first week finishes in Darwin on Thursday 5 December.

The second week of consulations will take place in cities and regional centres across Victoria, South Australia, Queensland, and Western Australia, with additional sessions in New South Wales.

Digital resources designed to assist the community to understand and engage with the project, known as Our Continuing Story, can be sourced online.

Data and feedback from all sessions will be collated and published online, and submitted to the Department of Environment and Energy as part of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation process.

These national community consultations come after a public consultation session held at the BAE Systems Theatre on Thursday, 28 November. The Memorial previously conducted an eight-week stakeholder consultation process from 2 August to 26 September 2018, with a series of public workshops and forums held across Canberra, Sydney, Brisbane, Darwin, and Townsville.

The Memorial’s quarterly e-newsletter Our Next Chapter, featuring project updates and public consultation information, is available for subscription. First published in November, the next issue will be released in February 2020.

Feedback can be provided to the Memorial Development Project via development@awm.gov.au.
