Thousands attend 2011 Anzac Day National Ceremony
The Australian War Memorial today drew more than 9,000 visitors to the Anzac Day National Ceremony.
Author, journalist and member of the Australian War Memorial Council, Les Carlyon, gave a moving Commemorative Address stating that Anzac Day was not about the ‘glory of war’ nor ‘triumphalism’ but about ‘remembering those ordinary, decent Australians.’
The Hon Nicola Roxon MP represented the Prime Minister of Australia.
Australian War Memorial Director Steve Gower said it was uplifting to see so many people attending the ceremony to pay tribute to our service men and women.
“Anzac Day gives Australians the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice made by so many, to honour their service and give thanks for their courage in great adversity.”
The Memorial will remain open until 5pm today. Poppies can be placed on the Roll of Honour and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The museum’s galleries are also open.
The Australian War Memorial is one of the world’s great museums, a place to remember and learn about the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on society.
