Dorothy Murray aged 79 living in Launceston and a highly respected Elder. Dorothy left Cape Barren Island to work in Launceston. Dorothy was the founder of the Aboriginal Elders Council of Tasmania. Formed in the 1970's it quickly developed into a successful organisation, providing essential services that benefited the Elders of our community and became a central meeting place for all. Cooked meals, meals on wheels, funeral gathering and arrangements done by the council, arts and crafts for the community alongside Elders, the activities were many and guided by many of our strong women. Dorothy went on to receive the Centenary Medal of Achievement by Prime Minister John Howard for her service and dedication to her community. Dorothy, although retired by many years now, remains on the Board of Directors today.
