About the Memorial's Online Encyclopedia

The Australian War Memorial's Online Encyclopedia has been developed by the Research Centre in response to the literally thousands of requests made each year to the Memorial for information about military history and about the Memorial itself. From A for Anzac, through G for George (the Memorial's Avro Lancaster bomber), to Z Special Unit, the Encyclopedia will allow you to search the contents of the Memorial's databases and webpages, and provides links to many other resources. It can help you to: research your family history; learn more about Australia's involvement in overseas conflict and peacekeeping; and discover items in our national collection ranging from works of art, photographic images and militaria to relics such as aircraft, tanks and guns.

Included in many of the Encyclopedia entries are written contributions from the Research Centre's files of research, the work of past and present curatorial staff and military historians. There are also links to other websites and sources of information outside the Australian War Memorial. These are inserted for convenience and do not constitute endorsement of material at those sites, or any associated organisation, product or service.

Entries in the Encyclopedia are currently in two forms:

  1. individual links to existing War Memorial webpages and information currently on our website, and
  2. multi-page entries comprising links to photographic images and documents from the Australian War Memorial's collections, and to other sources of information outside the Memorial. Over time, the staff of the Research Centre will add more fully developed multi-pages.

The Australian War Memorial's mission is to assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society. To further these goals, the Memorial is offering broad public access to a range of information through its website. The Memorial presents these materials as part of the record of the past and in remembrance of those who made the supreme sacrifice for their country.
