Darnell, Aubrey Hugh (Major, d.1918)
Collection relating to service of Major Aubrey Hugh Darnell DSO, 11 Battalion, Gallipoli and France, 1915-1918. Collection includes copies of letters written home to family in England. Originals were made available to Australia House, London for copying by Darnell's family in 1928, in response to a request made by the Australian War Memorial. Location of originals unknown.
Biographical note: Major, DSO, 11th Bn, AIF. Civil servant of Perth, WA; born Dublin, Ireland 7 May 1886; educated at Cargilfield Preparatory School, Edinburgh; and Pocklington Grammar, Yorkshire, England; was commissioned in 3 Munster Fusiliers in 1903; came to Australia September 1910; appointed Second Lieutenant 11 Battalion, AIF 25 August 1914; appointed Lieutenant 1 February 1915; temporary Captain 11 September 1915; Captain 20 February 1916; appointed Staff Captain, B Group Tidworth 25 July 1916; rejoined 11 Battalion 1 May 1917; appointed second in command 11 Battalion, 26 June 1918. Died 24 September 1918 of wounds received near Roisel, France.
