Collection relating to the First World War service of 1094 Private George Henry Davies who served with D Company, 36 Battalion. Collection consists of a typed memoir titled "The Story of my Doings, Thoughts, Spiritual Desires, during the period of the Great War, 1914-1917"; some typed fragments of a diary, 21 January to 22 November 1916; two original letters written home; and typed copies of condolence letters sent to his mother. The memoir covers training, and service on the Western Front including a description of the Messines offensive in which he was later killed on 12 July 1917. The memoir also contains evidence of the emotional and spiritual challenges experienced by Davies and shows evidence of his commitment to his religious beliefs. Before enlisting, Davies had been a chaplain.
