Studio portrait of 29 Private (Pte) Charles Edward Downey, D Company, Infantry, of Woolloomoolloo, NSW, who enlisted on 18 February, 1885. At enlistment he stated he was 23, unmarried and a plumber and gas fitter. He embarked on 3 March 1885 on SS Iberia. Pte Downey was wounded in action on 5 April 1885, shot through the foot, and returned to Australia on 23 June 1885 on board SS Arab. He had previously served with the 2nd Regiment NSW Volunteer Infantry.
