Gold cross and chain : Miss Olive Harrison
Chisel engraved 9 carat gold crucifix and chain. The front of the cross has been elaborately engraved at the end of each arm. The back of the cross is plain. The chain consists of a series of uniform links or rings. Each division in the chain is made up of four separate links that twist to form a rope pattern.
Associated with 3852 Private Walter Henry Harrison who served with 18 and 1 Battalions during the First World War. Harrison was born in Sydney in 1897 and worked as a printer until his enlistment with the AIF on 15 August 1915. He sailed for Egypt with the 9th Reinforcements of 18 Battalion in the troopship 'Runic'. The unit proceeded to France in April 1916. Harrison transferred to 1 Battalion in February 1917.
In October, while in charge of a machine gun section, Harrison was reported wounded and missing. He was later confirmed killed in action on 3 October 1917, and is buried at Villers-Bretonneux Memorial Cemetery in France.
Walter gave Olive the cross before he embarked for active service on 20 January 1916.
