Description

Pair of identical trench art paper knives. The handle of each knife has been fashioned from a spent .303 cartridge. The brass blade is scimitar shaped and has been soldered to the cartridge handle. A Royal Australian Navy button is attached to the base of each handle. The button shows a fouled anchor positioned on an angle surmounted by King's crown with 'ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY' stamped around the outer circular edge, and dates c. 1925-1932.

History / Summary

Made by 16877 Petty Officer Leslie Raymond Hubber while serving in the cruiser HMAS Australia during the Second World War. Hubber enlisted in the regular navy on 31 August, 1925. In January 1945 the ship came under a series of attacks by Japanese kamakazi aircraft in Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines and Hubber was mentioned in dispatches 'For gallantry in the face of the enemy'. He was discharged on 14 December 1945.
