Model of naval cannon : Petty Officer L R Hubber, HMAS Australia
Trench art naval cannon made from brass and wood. The barrel of the cannon is made from a heavy piece of brass that has been hollowed out. The base of the barrel is rounded and has a small hole drilled into the top side joining the hollowed interior. The barrel rests on pivots attached to the base carriage allowing some movement. The carriage is made of wood that has been painted black and varnished. The cannon rests, and is carried, on four brass wheels. The back of the cannon has a brass name plate 'TESS' which is secured to the carriage by twelve small nails.
Made by 16877 Petty Officer Leslie Raymond Hubber while serving in the cruiser HMAS Australia during the Second World War. Hubber enlisted in the regular navy on 31 August, 1925. In January 1945 the ship came under a series of attacks by Japanese kamakazi aircraft in Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines and Hubber was mentioned in dispatches 'For gallantry in the face of the enemy'. He was discharged on 14 December 1945.
