Description
The grave of Samuel George Pearse VC MM, of the AIF and Australian Detachment, Royal Fusiliers, who was killed in action on 29 August 1919. Pearse was discharged from the AIF in Britain after being awarded the Military Medal for bravery at Ypres whilst serving with the 2nd Machine Gun Company. Following his discharge on 18 July 1919 he joined the North Russia Relief Force with the 45th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He was involved in fighting along the railway south of Archangel and was killed in action during the final assault on 29 August 1919 near Emtsa. Sergeant Pearse was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for extreme bravery in the face of the enemy.
