Description

Light blue Australian Federal Police short sleeved shirt with shoulder straps and two breast pockets. Each shoulder strap bears a dark blue slide with woven crown and star rank insignia for Superintendent. The collar bears silver anodised gorget patches on each side. Each sleeve has a black shoulder title edged in white, with embroidered white lettering 'AUSTRALIAN POLICE'. There is a round embroidered United Nations (UN) cloth badge below the shoulder title on the right sleeve and an embroidered Australian blue ensign below the shoulder title on the left sleeve. There is a blue and white plastic UN name tag 'ROD WALKER' above the right pocket. Attached to each pocket flap are two UN plastic photographic identity cards, one, on the right pocket for UNAMET, and on on the left pocket for UNTAET. The back of the shirt bears the words 'Thanks from John Howard' in black texta.

History / Summary

Worn by Superintendent Rodney Walker of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) during his service in East Timor with United Nations Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) and United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). Walker served in East Timor as one of nine AFP members from September to October 1999 and was in charge of the UN tent city. He left East Timor on 31 October 1999, after meeting Australian Prime Minister John Howard at International Force East Timor (INTERFET) Headquarters. The shirt was signed by the Prime Minister at this meeting.
