Description
Collection relating to the service of Flying Officer Stanley Hawken, Royal Australian Air Force, France, 1944-1945. Hawken was serving as a gunner in a RAF Lancaster Squadron when he was shot down over France, 19 July 1944. He evaded capture by the occupying German force with the help of a French family and later joined the partisan movement before being rescued by the American army in Cheminon, September 1944.
Collection comprises telegrams sent to Hawken's mother informing her that he was missing, July 1944, a telegram sent advising her that Hawken had been found in enemy occupied territory, August 1944 and false identity papers prepared by the French resistance, 1944.
