Fund raising medalet 'Good Luck to the Australian Bushmens Corps 1900'
Gilded bronze fund raising medalet showing on the obverse a horse and rider with the words around the edge 'GOOD LUCK TO THE AUSTRALIAN BUSHMENS CONTINGENT 1900', and on the reverse a veiled head of Queen Victoria with the words 'BRITISH TRANSVAAL WAR 1899 1900'. The medalet is suspended from a length of blue, white and red cotton sateen ribbon threaded through two pressed metal suspenders decorated in a Greek key pattern. The top suspender has an attached pin so that the medalet can be attached to clothing.
Medalets like these were produced to raise funds for comforts for Australian troops sent to the Boer War. This medalet is unusual in that it has survived with its original suspender and ribbon. These were often removed so that the medalets could be attached to a watch chain. This particular medalet was issued in white metal, gilded bronze or silver, the silver version being the highest priced of the three.
