Description

A group of Australian officers of the 21st Battalion, standing amongst washing suspended from lines above them, in a trench at Lone Pine on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Identified, left to right: Captain (Capt) (later Lieutenant Colonel) Henry Arnold Crowther (smoking pipe), awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) on 21 August 1917; Lieutenant (Lt) (later Captain) Alexander Smeeton Robertson (seated); Capt (later Lieutenant Colonel) Bernard Oscar Charles Duggan, awarded a DSO on 18 April 1918; Lt John Dyke (later 59th Battalion.) This image was taken three days before the evacuation of allied forces from the Gallipoli Peninsula was completed.
