Description
Informal portrait of a group of Australian officers of D Company, 21st Battalion, in a dugout at Steele's Post on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Identified, left to right: Captain (Capt) Richard Godfrey Smith; Capt (later Lieutenant Colonel) Bernard Oscar Charles Duggan, Company Commander, awarded a Distinguished Service Medal (DSO) on 18 April 1918); Lieutenant (Lt) Gordon Loris Maxfield (without cap); and Lt (later Captain) Ewen Mackay Bland. The officers are seen relaxing in the dugout; one reading a paper, another smoking a pipe, and a third seated at a table set with jars and bottles.
