Description

Black folding leather wallet with a faded gold representation of a RAAF airman's rank badge stamped in the top right corner. The wallet is closed with a small flap and press stud which is fixed at the front of the wallet. The inside of the wallet is lined with black cotton fabric. There are two window compartments, one on either side of the opened wallet. Three slide compartments are situated beneath the smaller window compartment on the left. Also on the left side, 'REAL SEALSKIN' is stamped in gold. A thin piece of elastic is attached to the middle fold of the wallet for retaining notes and papers. Included in the contents of the wallet is a 'SYDNEY UNIVERSITY UNION' membership badge, five railway tickets and two telegrams advising of George's death.

History / Summary

Associated with the service of 15508 Leading Aircraftman George Henry Moore who served in the RAAF during the Second World War. Moore was born in Ireland on 30 August 1909. He emigrated to Australia and worked as a Marine Engineer until his enlistment in the RAAF on 3 June 1940. After completing initial training Moore was posted to 2 Operational Training Unit in Mildura, Victoria as a Fitter Armourer. On 23 June 1942, Moore, a passenger aboard Wirraway aircraft A20-506, was killed in an accident while flying over Lake Victoria during a shadow shooting exercise. His body was never recovered.
