Description

Members of 2 Aircraft Depot (2 AD) Paint Shop pose in front a 38 Squadron De Havilland Canada DHC-4A Caribou, having just stripped and resprayed it in United Nations (UN) white in preparation for its five year rotational deployment with the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). Note the "Fly United" logo accompanied by two flying birds just below the cockpit and the masking still to be removed from the engine. The aircraft shown is A4-199, delivered to the RAAF in October 1964, allocated to 38 Squadron and which departed Richmond for its UNMOGIP deployment on 4 March 1975. It was the first of three Caribous (the others being A4-264 and -152) to be loaned to UN forces monitoring the Kashmir ceasefire and flew supply and personnel operations from both Rawlpindi, Pakistan and Srinigar, India on three separate deployments. Immediately after the first of these missions A4-199 was remarked with Red Cross insignia and sent to Portuguese Timor to conduct relief and first aid flights as civil war rocked the island. Personnel not identified.
