Description
Local villagers at Sisifiu on Malaita Island in the Solomon Islands with leaflets distributed by Captain Rachel Leal of 1st Intelligence Battalion of Operation Anode, Australia's military and policing contribution to the multi-national Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). The leaflets promote the first hundred days of RAMSI and urge villagers to report crimes to the police and to be patient. The island of Malaita had been troubled by the violent activities of militia such as the Malaita Eagle Force (MEF), established in response to tensions between Malaitans and indigenous inhabitants of Guadalcanal on the island of Guadalcanal. The MEF agreed to surrender weapons as part of the arms amnesty allowed by RAMSI during August 2003. MEF leader, Jimmy 'Rasta' Lusibaea, was arrested on 15 October 2003.
