6th Australian Infantry Regiment medalet : Sergeant Bugler F Greet, 26th Infantry Regiment
Gilt and enamel medalet. The obverse shows a red enamelled garter with red lettering '6TH A.I.Regt 1ST. BTN. S.AFRICA 1899-02' surmounted by a king's crown. In the centre a voided rising sun bears a lion, the motto 'NULLI SECUNDUS' and date '30-6-12'. The reverse is engraved 'SGT. BUGLER F. GREET 2197 C COY 26TH Inf Reg'. The manufacturer's details are also impressed on the reverse.
Corporal Francis 'Frank' Patrick Greet was born in Melbourne in 1895. He served with his local cadet unit from the age of ten. This medalet was awarded to him during a competition between the 6 and 26 Australian Infantry (militia) Regiments on 30 June 1912, when he was a member of C Company, 26 Infantry Regiment. Greet enlisted for service with the AIF on 17 August 1914. He was assigned the number 1284 and posted to 2 Field Artillery Brigade. He was awarded the Military Medal for courageous action at Pozieres, France, between 22 and 25 July 1916, for maintaining telephone lines while under fire. Frank Greet was killed at Polygon Wood in Belgium on 30 August 1917 and was buried at the Reninghelst New Military Cemetery.
