Other Ranks' summer field dress shirt : North Korean People's Army
Brushed cotton twill long sleeved khaki combat shirt as worn by North Korean soldiers. The shirt has a stand and fall collar and a placket front with three button closure. There are a pair of breast patch pockets, each with a pointed flap secured by a brass button. The elbows are reinforced by a second layer of fabric, and the cuffs are secured by pairs of domed brass buttons. There are no shoulder straps, although fabric loops are present at each shoulder, and buttons (which would have been hidden by the collar) appear to have been removed. There is a white cotton label sewn behind the right hand pocket, which may have been intended to be marked with the wearer's details. The shirt is crudely, though strongly, constructed, and has many loose threads and untidy seams. It shows little sign of wear, but is heavily stained and marked, particularly on the right hand pocket and right rear shoulder, with what appears to be black ink.
This garment was captured by Australian forces in Korea during 1950-51. The North Korean People's Army derived its uniform from that of the Soviet Union, and this shirt is very similar to that worn by Russian troops.
