Trousers : Flieger-Ersatz-Abtielung 1
German Air Service (Luftstreitkrafte) brown cotton moleskin trousers with red piping in the outer leg seams. The three concealed buttons on the fly and seven on the waistband are made from black plastic that bears their maker's name 'STEINNUSS / HOSENKNOPF'. There is a pocket with a buttoned diagonal slit opening in the front of both hips, and a pocket for a fob watch in the front right side. It has a small steel ring above it. Across the back of the waistband is an adjustment strap that has a blued steel buckle. '15' and '72/89' are written in pencil on the tailor's label that has been sewn inside the back of the waistband and there is also a black military compliance stamp, 'FL.B.1. / 1915'. The waistband and pockets are lined with cream-coloured cotton twill. There is a cotton twill hanging loop on the rear waistband lining.
These trousers were found on the Somme on 8 August 1918. Details of the wearer's service are unknown but he served in Flieger-Ersatz-Abtielung 1 (FEA 1), a unit that provided replacement flyers to the German Air Service (Luftstreitkrafte).
