Group portrait of 28 officers of the 23rd Battalion, including Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) George Frederick Morton, Commanding Officer (seated front row, fourth from left), and Chaplain Captain Percy Bladen (seated front row, second from left), both serving with Headquarters. The other officers in this portrait are probably members of the 23rd Battalion Headquarters, A Company, B Company, C Company or D Company who embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides (A14) on 10 May 1915, with Lt Col Morton and Chaplain Bladen. Their exact identities and positions are unknown. Headquarters: Lieutenant (Lt) Douglas Barnes; Lt Eric Thomas Brind; Lt Albert Valentine Dwyer; Lt Timothy Bernard Farrell; Captain (Capt) Harry Franklyn Green (AAMC); Lt Ernest Ederblom King and Capt George Hodges Knox. A Company: Capt Matthew Baird; Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Irving Russell Flett; 2nd Lt Reginald Eric Hain; Lt John Edward Lloyd; 2nd Lt John McNab Main and 2nd Lt Percy George Rupert Parkes.
