Description
A statue at the Turkish 57th Infantry Battalion Cemetery of the world's oldest war veteran Huseyin Kacmaz and his grandaughter Eylül . He fought in the Balkan and Canakkale (Gallipoli) wars. He was wounded in fighting at Chunuk Bair on 10 August 1915. He also fought at Dumlupinar in the Turkish War of Independence and was awarded the Istiklal Medal in 1922. He died at his birthplace, Zonguldak Eregli Kestaneci village, on 10 September 1994, aged 110 years. The statue portrays him telling his grandaughter about his wartime experience. It is traditional for visitors to place some rosemary in the hand of the girl.
