German officer's shoulder board : 202nd Reserve Infantry Regiment
Description
German officer's silver braid shoulder board, with white wool cloth backing and edge, welt buttonhole at neck end, and brass numerals '202' held in place with split pins.
History / Summary
Single shoulder straps were routinely removed from dead or captured Germans for intelligence purposes, so that the names of the German units opposing the Allied forces could be established. This shoulder board was collected by a member of the 43rd Battalion, AIF, immediately after the battle of Hamel, on 4 July 1918.
