Description

Two unidentified Australian soldiers handcuff four alleged members of the Aitarak militia in a Dili street. Following the announcement of the referendum result in favour of independence at the beginning of September, Indonesian militias launched a campaign of arson, murder and destruction across the territory. The Aitarak militia, the major militia group in Dili, led by Eurico Guterres, was amongst the most notorious of the militias formed to oppose independence for East Timor. Australian forces were deployed to East Timor on 20 September as part of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET); an Australian led international mission to bring peace and stability to the former colony under a United Nations mandate.
