Description
Two unidentified Australian soldiers handcuff four suspected members of the Aitarak militia. Following the announcement of the referendum result in favour of independence on 30 August 1999, pro-Indonesian militias launched a campaign of arson, murder and destruction across East Timor. The Aitarak militia, the major pro-Indonesian militia group in Dili, led by Eurico Guterres, was amongst the most notorious of the militias formed to oppose independence for East Timor. Australian forces were deployed to East Timor on 20 September as part of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET); an Australian led international mission to bring peace and stability to East Timor under a United Nations mandate.
