Copeman, James (Major, b.1919 - d.2010)
Collection relating to the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) and United Nations India-Pakistan Observation Mission (UNIPOM) service of 2905043 Major James (Jim) Copeman, MC, MM, 1958-1959, 1965.
Folder 1 of 2 - Consists of a diary (and a typed transcript of the diary) Copeman maintained from 1 June 1958 to 5 June 1959 during his deployment to India and Pakistan as a Military Observer with UNMOGIP. He writes of his preparations for the deployment (medical testing, administrative arrangements, and the return and issue of equipment), his journey to Srinagar in Kashmir, and his initial impressions of the city. Thereafter, he comments on his daily duties, briefings, his interactions with other Military Observers, the driving conditions and natural landscape, his work around Rawalakot, Sialkot and Rawalpindi, investigating incidents and cease fire violations, the weather, his observations on local life, recreation and letter writing, visiting picquets, and dining with Lieutenant General Robert Nimmo, the head of UNMOGIP.
Folder 2 of 2 - Consists of a typed four-page memoir by Copeman on his service with UNIPOM in 1965. Copeman, who was serving with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) at the time, writes that he volunteered to be redeployed to help establish UNIPOM in the wake of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. He describes the tense situation along the border region, the willingness of the Indian and Pakistani commanders to work with the United Nations, and cease fire violations. Copeman also reflects on how his experiences during the Second World War helped prepare him for peacekeeping operations.
