Description

Dark blue wool twill pantaloons with two yellow worsted stripes, each 2.5cm in width, extending down the side seams as far as the ankle openings. Coated metal buttoned waist and fly; the waist buttons made by 'DENTON BROS MELBOURNE', and the fly by 'NE PLUS ULTRA'. Welt pocket at the lower edge of the waistband on the wearer's right side. Waistband and pocket lined with cotton drill, lower waist and fly with linen. Waist fastens with large ferrous metal hook and eye. Legs narrow from knee to ankle. Ankle openings lined with cotton drill and fastened with a single metal button. Leg hems bound with narrow black worsted tape.

History / Summary

Pantaloons made of the same wool twill as jacket and worn by Nordenfeldt Battery of the Victorian Horse Artillery as well as the Victorian Cavalry proper. Knee boots were worn over the narrow trouser leg. The Victorian Cavalry was formed in 1885 and disbanded in 1892.
