Officer's full dress trousers : Infantry, Victorian Colonial Military Forces
Description
Dark blue wool twill trousers with wide gold infantry pattern lace, with crimson silk stripe down the centre, extending down the side seams. Trouser fabric has pale blue stripes woven into the wrong side of the fabric. Welt pocket at right waist lined with cotton drill that has an illegible stamp on one side. Celluloid buttoned fly and waist. Waist lined with black cotton and fly with grey cotton drill. Trousers have straight legs and are hand hemmed.
History / Summary
Full dress trousers worn for parades and reviews. The blue fabric used was often referred to as 'tartan cloth' in the 19th century because of the stripes woven into the warp and weft of the cloth producing a check pattern on the reverse of the fabric only.
