Officer's full dress tunic : Infantry, Victorian Colonial Military Forces
Scarlet superfine tunic with garter blue silk velvet stand collar and pointed cuffs. Upper edge of collar decorated with gold lace piped with white wool and lower edge with gold Russia braid. Twisted round gold cord shoulder straps lined with scarlet wool, each with two gold and silver embroidered bullion stars for the rank of captain and a single Victorian Military Forces button. Pointed cuffs decorated with two chevrons of gold lace traced with gold Russia braid forming an Austrian knot above and a crowsfoot and eye below. Eight gilt Victorian Military Forces buttons made by 'STOKES & MARTIN MELB.' at front and two at back waist. Tunic fronts and closed back vents below waist buttons, piped with white wool. Lower edge of tunic left raw. Body of tunic lined with quilted scarlet silk twill with concealed pocket lined with white cotton twill inside left breast. Skirt lined with white wool twill. Waist reinforced with strip of red dyed leather with long grain finish; a brass hook and eye stitched at each end. Sleeves lined with white silk twill and collar with black ribbed silk. At the back neck a maker's embroidered label and a black silk tab at the neck. Neck fastened with one large brass hook and eye and a small ferrous metal hook and eye.
Full dress scarlet infantry tunics, after 1893, were worn for parades and reviews only. The garter blue velvet found on the collar and cuffs of this tunic is unusual as it is more commonly found on engineers' tunics.
