Description

Scarlet superfine jacket with garter blue velvet stand collar and pointed cuffs. Upper edge of collar decorated with gold lace and lower edge with gold Russia braid. Twisted round gold cord shoulder straps lined with scarlet superfine and each with two embroidered bullion stars for the rank of captain and a single Victorian Military Forces button. Pointed velvet cuffs decorated with a single chevron of gold lace. Jacket has pointed fronts and a rounded back. Fronts and lower edges of jacket decorated with gold lace that forms two eyes at each of the back panels. Left front has a row of small, pointed gilt studs and the jacket is fastened with alternate brass hooks and eyes on each front. Jacket fully lined with quilted scarlet silk, with a concealed pocket inside the left breast. Lower edge of lining reinforced with strip of red dyed leather with long grain finish. Sleeves lined with white silk. Collar lined with black silk twill with maker's embroidered label sewn into back neck edge. Neck is fastened with single brass hook and eye and loop of gold Russia braid sewn into the right edge.

Mess jacket worn over waistcoat. The garter blue velvet found on the collar and cuffs is unusual as it is more commonly found on engineers' uniforms.
