Other rank's service dress jacket : First class private, Kenpei-tai, Imperial Japanese Army
Imperial Japanese Army kenpei-tai (military police) other ranks revised 45 Pattern khaki wool winter service dress jacket, lined throughout with cream calico. The loose fitting jacket has deep vents in each side seam. The five buttons down the front opening and the ones on the pockets are flat and made from gold coloured metal. There are two inset breast pockets with pointed flaps and a single button. Red collar patches are sewn to the stand collar, which has a loose ended white cotton collar liner sewn into it. There is a band of narrow red braid around each cuff. The shoulder strap rank insignia of three yellow stars on red cloth indicates that the rank of the wearer was kenpei jotohei (superior, or first class private, military police). There is a buttoned belt loop at the waist of the left side. Printed inside the left front panel is a maker's label indicating that the jacket is a 'Revised 45 Pattern', meaning that the pattern was introduced in the 45th year of the Meiji Era, which was 1912; that the jacket was made in the 7th year of the Taisho Era, which was 1918; and that it was 'Certified Main Depot'. There is another red oval shaped marking inside the pocket that has been let into the lining behind the maker's label. This mark indicates the place of manufacture or inspection, which was Kusakabe.
