Description
Pattern 1845 Infantry Officer's leather scabbard. Gilt Pattern 1822 half basket guard with the VR cypher as the cartouche badge and hinged inner portion. The scabbard is black leather with three brass fittings of the frog stud and ring locket, chape and central hanger mount. The locket is engraved on the reverse J.W. THOMAS HM 40th REG.

Captain Thomas, 40th Regiment of Foot, was the commanding officer of the British troops at the Eureka Uprising, Ballarat on 3 December 1854.
