Description
Pattern 1845 Infantry Officer's Sword. Gilt Pattern 1822 half basket guard with the VR cypher as the cartouche badge and hinged inner portion. The blade has a single fuller to each side and is etched with the VR cypher and a floral pattern for half the length. The ricasso is marked with the military outfitters name of J B Johnstone 27 Jermyn St. London.
History / Summary
Captain Thomas, 40th Regiment of Foot, was the commanding officer of the British troops at the Eureka Uprising, Ballarat on 3 December 1854.
