Description

LANDING SPRING OF A GERMAN AEROPLANE BROUGHT DOWN NEAR YPRES IN FEBRUARY, 1918.

The object is a metal spring 290 mm long with an approx 60 mm diameter coil. The diameter of the steel rod that makeas up the spring is 16 mm. (It is too large for the wheel undercarriage of a normal single seat or two sesat aircraft. It may have been from the undercarriage of a bomber or attached to the tail skid.)

History / Summary

Single seat and two-seat aircraft used elastic cord in their undercarriages until shortages late in the war caused the use of coiled springs. This spring is too large for such a location. Tail skids were also sprung the same way. Larger aircraft such as bombers did use large springs in their undercarriage and this spring may well have been from such an aircraft.
