Description

Informal group portrait of officers on the deck of the 'Drayton Grange' transporting troops home to Australia after the end of the war in South Africa. The Drayton Grange departed Durban on 11 July 1902 with 2000 troops and arrived at Melbourne on 7 August 1902. Some troops continued on to Sydney. There was an outbreak of measles on board resulting in 17 deaths. Officer on board included Colonel J S Lyster, in command (centre on bench, black boots) ; Captain (Capt) F A Dove, Staff Officer; Capt G S Oakes, Chaplain (probably 5th right); Lieutenant Cyril Brudenell Bingham White, Orderly Staff Officer (back row, 2nd right); Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Hon Rupert Carrington, Commander, 3rd NSW Bushmen; Lt Col J H A Lee, Commander, 1st Australian Commonwealth Horse; Lt Col R Wallace, Commander 3rd Australian Commonwealth Horse; Lt Col G J Johnson, Commander 4th Australian Commonwealth Horse; Lt Col C G H Irving, Commander 6th Australian Commonwealth Horse; Capt C Long Innes, Commander Scottish Horse.
