Iraq election poster ( President, Ghazi al Yawar)
Iraq election poster featuring a head and shoulders portrait of Ghazi Mashal Ajil al-Yawar (b.1958-) standing on a podium. Below him is a landscape at dawn (symbolic of ‘new dawn’ in Iraq’s history?), an image of two hands clasped above a map of a united Iraq and a photograph of cheering and happy Iraqi women and children, in the lower left. Ghazi al-Yawar is the Vice- President of Iraq under the Iraqi Transitional Government and was President of Iraq under the Iraqi Interim Government from 2004 to 2005. He was re-elected as one of two Vice-Presidents in Iraq in April 2005, when Jalal Talabani was elected President. In the election he was leader of ‘The Iraqis’, the largest Sunni list of candidates. His list won about 150,000 votes in the National Assembly elections, 2% of the national vote. The poster was obtained by an Australian Defence Force member , serving with 'Operation Catalyst', Australia's contribution to the rehabilitation and reconstruction of Iraq, which began in July 2003.
