Collection relating to the Vietnam War service of Lieutenant Peter James Winter, 1970-1971.

Collection consists of letters, official documents, and ephemera. The letters detail his daily life in Vietnam, his emotions including love and homesickness, the food and ration supplies, the Vietnamese environment, patrols and fighting. Many of the letters written to his family and wife were later published in his book 'The Year I Said Goodbye'.

Collection is divided into 6 wallets and one oversized item.

Wallet 1 of 6 contains 1 folder with 29 items. These are letters dated February to March 1970, bank cheque, 7RAR combine church service and farewell parade (4 February), 7RAR Officers' Mess farewell dinner menu (29 January), and a telegram.

Wallet 2 of 6 contains 1 folder with 24 items. These are letters and small cartoons dated from April to May 1970. Letter dated 26 April 1970 mentions the deaths of Robert Edward Hughes and Graham Robert Kavanagh. Letter dated 28 April 1970 mentions the death of Robin Christiaan Pothof.

Wallet 3 of 6 contains 1 folder with 29 items. These are letters dated from June to July 1970.

Wallet 4 of 6 contains 1 folder with 30 items. These are letters dated from August to September 1970.

Wallet 5 of 6 contains 2 folders with a total of 38 items. Folder 1 contains 23 items including letters dated from October to November 1970, travel tickets, and other ephemera. Folder 2 contains 15 letters dated December 1970.

Wallet 6 of 6 contains 2 folders with a total of 26 items. Folder 1 contains 20 letters dated from January to February 1971. Folder 2 contains 6 items including a leave pass, regimental record of service, two pocket books, Officers' Mess Farewell Dinner menu (21 February 1971), and a medical examination letter.

Oversized item is a large map of South East Vietnam. Map coordinates are provided by Peter Winter in letters written to his wife.
