Souvenir United States flag with Commonwealth stars : Anzac Day 1945
Description
Small silk screened cotton American flag with 48 Commonwealth style (eight pointed) stars. Signed in ink just below stars 'Souvenir of 'ANZAC DAY' / MELBOURNE / AUSTRALIA - April 25, 1945 (illegible signature) USN'.
History / Summary
Unknown. Found by the donor in a cemetery in the United States. The stars used on this flag are the eight-pointed Commonwealth version, rather than the usual five pointed United States ones. This would indicate Australian manufacture. The inscription suggests it was taken to the 1945 Anzac Day service in Melbourne by a member of the US Navy.
