Description

Studio portrait of Dutch sailor, Jan van Os, taken prior to the Second World War. Leading Seaman van Os served in the Netherlands East Indies (NEI) as a crew member on Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) flying boats and small craft, and was selected for evacuation to Australia with other RNN personal in March 1942. Unfortunately, his ship, the KPM steamer Duymaer Van Twist, was intercepted by Japanese cruisers two days out of Tjilatjap, and all the Dutch servicemen aboard became prisoners of war (POWs). Jan van Os survived captivity at the Makassar Camp in Celebes and settled in Australia after the war. He died in December 1984.
