Flying goggles : Lieutenant F Pamphilon, Australian Flying Corps, AIF
Pair of yellow tinted flying goggles edged with windproof silk stockinette and set into a chrome leather face/nose piece. The leather is edged with tape and artificial fur, and lined with velveteen. The inner edges of the lenses are also lined with artificial fur. The goggles are marked in ink on the inside 'F PAMPHILON'. The elastic securing strap has perished and broken, and is marked in ink 'LT F PAMPHILON'.
Lieutenant Frank Pamphilon enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 8 June 1915 in Melbourne. In February 1918 he was selected to train as a pilot with the Australian Flying Corps. He was detached to No. 2 School of Military Aviation, Oxford on 10 May with the rank of Cadet. He transferred to No. 7 (Training) Squadron AFC as an Air Mechanic 2nd Class on 30 July and graduated as a Flying Officer (Pilot) on 18 December. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 8 March 1919. Pamphilon embarked for return to Australia on 25 September aboard HT Port Denison disembarking on 13 November. He was discharged on 19 January 1920.
