German candle-lantern from the Bellicourt Tunnel, France
Description
German, galvanised metal, candle-lantern that has a pair of brass handles on the back and other brass fittings on the side-hinged door on the front. The lantern is well made. Yellow coloured wax has run from the candle into the base of the inside of the lantern.
History / Summary
This candle-lantern was found in an improvised German kitchen that had been established in a chamber in the Bellicourt Tunnel, France. The kitchen, which had been destroyed by a shell that had killed a party of Germans, was discovered on 29 September 1918.
