Studio hand coloured portrait of 3447 Private (Pte) Ernest Albert McCormack, 55th Battalion, of Brookside, Vic. Pte McCormack an engine driver before enlistment enlisted in Darlinghurst, NSW on 4 January 1917 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Anchises on 24 January 1917. He died of wounds in Belgium 20 October 1917 aged 28 years. His brother 2845 Pte John Joseph McCormack served with 38th Battalion and returned to Australia on 15 April 1917.
