Capstan tobacco and tin : Captain B Brock, 2/2 Battalion, AIF
Capstan 'Ready Rubbed' tobacco sealed in original tin. The lid of the tin appears to be have originally been painted yellow or gold, but has since faded and chipped off. The tin has a blue Capstan sticker label which extends around the entire face of the tin and is faded and torn in places. It reads 'CAPSTAN / READY RUBBED / FINE CUT TOBACCO' on two sides. The tin is rusted and the original ring pull mechanism is missing.
This item is associated with the service of Captain Bruce Brock. Born in Darwin in March 1907, Brock enlisted in the AIF in December 1939. Prior to this he was employed as a school teacher. Brock embarked from Australia in January 1940 with 2/2 Battalion which arrived in Egypt a month later. He undertook training in Palestine till the end of August. Promoted to the rank of captain in July 1941, Brook took part in 2/2 Battalion's early battles in Bardia and Tobruk in Libya, and afterwards in the Greek Campaign. Brook returned to Australia in mid-1942 via Papua New Guinea aboard the Ambulance Transport 'Felix Roussel'. He was discharged from service in January 1944.
