Studio portrait of 5975 Private Horace William Brown, 7th (later 59th) Battalion, of Chewton, Victoria. A school teacher prior to enlisting, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Themistocles (A32) on 28 July 1916. On 6 March 1917, he was killed in action near Flers, France, aged 23. He is buried in the Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs, France.
